Head shaving: the real cost at home and at the barber’s

Head shaving: the real cost at home and at the barber’s

Published Updated

Choose well / The price of a clean head

Nobody looks in the mirror and dreams of a spreadsheet.

You want a clean head, a beard that sits right, then to get on with your day. The price on the box only tells the beginning. Replacement blades and appointments left in the diary write the rest of the bill.

Do it all at home, leave it to the barber, or keep the best of both? Let’s look at three years of upkeep. Long enough to see what a habit costs.

France price edition · EUR · prices checked 31 October 2026. Use local prices outside France.

At home, at the barber’s, or both?

You shave often
Start with what refills cost in use. You will buy them far more often than a new razor.
You already have the gear
Keep what does the job. Count only what you still need to buy.
You value your barber
Keep the service you enjoy. To take head shaving home, ask for the beard-only price.

On your last bill, find what you would actually drop. The difference in price is your saving. If you still make the trip for your beard, the travel cost stays.

Three schedules · three years

An example with a €24 appointment and €4 travel cost. At home: three sessions a week with the Pro 2+, bought without a subscription, and a replacement head budgeted every three months.

At the barber’s

€1,008.00

12 visits a year

At home

€567.90

3 sessions a week · no subscription

Both

€1,071.90

Same home routine + 6 visits a year

36 barber visits, 468 home sessions, or 468 home sessions plus 18 visits: these budgets cover different frequencies and services. Replace the example appointment price with your own.

The mixed routine costs €63.90 more than the barber alone here. It keeps six appointments a year alongside head shaving at home. That extra spend should buy something that matters to you.

The handle catches your eye. The blades build the bill.

The GilletteLabs kit€25.99
Three years of refills€479.00
Our 468-session basket: one kit with a cartridge, then ten packs of twelve. The base of four sessions per cartridge comes from one person’s experience.

Count how many comfortable sessions your cartridge gives you, including your head and face. That number keeps coming back to your basket, month after month.

4 sessions per cartridge

€1.24per session

5 sessions per cartridge

€1.03per session

7 sessions per cartridge

€0.83per session

Cost per session for the full basket: handle and clipper kept three years, gel and cartridges in packs of twelve. Three consumption assumptions, not a measured head-shaving average.

At five sessions per cartridge, the GilletteLabs basket falls below the three Pro 2+ budgets detailed below. Comfort sets the count: there is no prize for making a pulling blade last long enough to win a row.

The box matters too. At four sessions per cartridge, buying refills in packs of four instead of twelve takes the same basket from €578.20 to €916.71. Check the cartridge price before the big number on the label.

Two tools, two routines

Choose the tool. Then the plan.

Here are the two baskets without a subscription, for three weekly sessions over three years. Both keep the equipment for the full period.

Equipment and consumables · 468 sessions
Equipment and plan3 yearsPer session
Pro 2+No subscription · head every 3 months€567.90€1.21
GilletteLabs + clipperEquipment kept 3 years · cartridges in packs of 12€578.20€1.24

Pro 2+ used dry: initial head plus 11 purchased heads. GilletteLabs: four sessions per cartridge, with gel. Prices checked 31 October 2026. Prices and method

€10.30 separates these baskets over three years. At that difference, the task you will want to repeat deserves your attention. The Pro 2+ head schedule remains a budget assumption: adjust it to actual wear.

Make the budget fit your life.

I already own a razor, a clipper or the Pro 2+

Keep what does the job. When deciding your next purchase, equipment already paid for comes out of the calculation. Count the supplies you need to buy and the appointments you will drop.

Already have a suitable clipper? Remove €22.99 from the GilletteLabs basket: it becomes €555.21 over three years. Already own the Pro 2+? Start with the condition of your head and your current plan. Bought individually, four heads cost €159.60; six cost €239.40. These are purchase quantities, not a prescribed schedule.

I shave twice a week, or every day
Cost per session over three years
EquipmentTwice a weekEvery day
Pro 2+Rituel · head every 2 months€1.94€0.55
Pro 2+Rituel · head every 3 months€1.58€0.45
Pro 2+No subscription · head every 3 months€1.82€0.52
GilletteLabs + clipperEquipment kept 3 years · cartridges in packs of 12€1.34€1.16

312 or 1,095 sessions over three years. GilletteLabs stays at four sessions per cartridge; purchases follow frequency. Pro 2+ head schedules stay fixed here: adjust those too if your rate of wear changes.

Pro 2+: subscription or individual purchases?

Rituel is the replacement-head subscription. Bought separately, the kit costs €129.00 and a five-blade SkinFlow™ head costs €39.90. You arrange each order.

Three options for 468 sessions over three years
Equipment and plan3 yearsPer session
Pro 2+Rituel · head every 2 months€605.05€1.29
Pro 2+Rituel · head every 3 months€493.44€1.05
Pro 2+No subscription · head every 3 months€567.90€1.21

A delivery every three months does not measure head life. Choose according to wear. Without a subscription, buying 17 heads instead of 11 takes the budget to €807.30, or €1.73 per session.

I care most about what I pay now

Cost per session spreads the bill. Your bank account sees the purchases. Here is the starting outlay, then the first year at three sessions a week.

Pro 2+ · 2-month Rituel
To start€96.75Year 1, including start€246.25
Pro 2+ · 3-month Rituel
To start€109.65Year 1, including start€214.32
Pro 2+ · no subscription, head every 3 months
To start€129.00Year 1, including start€248.70
GilletteLabs + clipper
To start€51.77Year 1, including start€257.32

The GilletteLabs starting outlay includes the kit with one cartridge, a clipper and one gel. Year one adds four packs of twelve cartridges and brings gel to six bottles. Remaining cartridges carry into the following year.

What if I replace the handle and clipper?

With a new handle at months 12 and 24 and a clipper at month 24, the GilletteLabs basket rises from €578.20 to €653.17, or €1.40 per session. Cartridges included in the new kits are deducted from refill needs.

This is a budget variation. The main table keeps the handle and clipper for three years. The clipper’s two-year legal guarantee is no reason to throw away a working tool.

The shave ends
at a clean sink.

Keep the clock running until then. Preparation, the back of your head, rinsing, putting things away: count the whole routine. At the barber’s, add the round trip and the wait.

The luxury of home is choosing the moment. The pleasure of the barber can be doing nothing. Compare your diaries as well as your bills.

Thomas’s take

Keep the routine that suits you.

Before buying, count two things: the refills your routine uses and the appointments you would actually drop. Leave the work you enjoy handing over with your barber.

And if your equipment already does the job, keep it: you have nothing to prove to your bathroom shelf.

The basket and its prices

French prices checked on 31 October 2026 and held constant in this projection. The Pro 2+ starts at €96.75 with the two-month Rituel, then €29.90 per refill; or €109.65, then €34.89 with the three-month Rituel. Without a subscription: €129.00 for the kit and €39.90 per five-blade SkinFlow™ head, with free French delivery displayed. This is a France-price comparison, not a local UK or US quote.

GilletteLabs and gel sold by Carrefour; Philips clipper sold directly by E.Leclerc, with free store collection. Carrefour Drive prices vary by store. No conditional loyalty benefit is deducted. This comparison is published by GroomSkull® MAG, GroomSkull®’s magazine.

The 36-month calculation

Pro 2+, 2-month Rituel: €96.75 + 17 × €29.90 = €605.05.
3-month Rituel: €109.65 + 11 × €34.89 = €493.44.
No subscription, 3-month schedule: €129 + 11 × €39.90 = €567.90.

One device at the start, with the initial head included. Renewals run to months 34 or 33; the month-36 delivery starts year four. Rituel budgets keep the subscription throughout. Other replacement heads are bought individually. At 468 sessions, divide each total by 468.

GilletteLabs, equipment kept: 1 kit + 1 clipper + 10 packs of 12 cartridges + 18 gels = €578.20. Of 117 cartridges needed, one comes with the kit; four remain in stock. With equipment replacements: 3 kits + 2 clippers + 10 packs of 12 + 18 gels = €653.17, with six cartridges left.

Purchases round up to full packs; stock carries across years. Gel is budgeted at one bottle per 26 sessions. Pro 2+ is used dry with its included trimmer, following the uses in its guide. Add other parts, skincare, any gel used with the electric shaver, heads replaced earlier and any paid delivery you choose. Water and electricity remain outside these baskets.

Cartridges, equipment and guarantees

Four sessions per cartridge comes from one person’s use on the head and parts of the face, with pulling beyond that point. Stiftung Warentest’s November 2024 test concerns beard shaving; Gillette’s “up to 30 shaves” is a manufacturer claim for a product presented for the face. Gillette’s head-shaving guide gives wear indicators, without a session count.

The 36-month period matches GroomSkull®’s standard three-year shaver warranty, battery included. Heads and accessories remain subject to wear. For a new clipper bought from a professional seller in France, the legal conformity guarantee lasts two years, also the EU minimum. It does not set a replacement date; a covered fault entitles the buyer to a free repair or replacement.

Recalculate for your own routine

At home: equipment to buy + refills and upkeep.
At the barber’s: services + travel.
Both: home budget + appointments kept.
Per session: total budget ÷ number of sessions.

Three weekly sessions give 468 over three years; two give 312. Daily use assumes 365 days a year, or 1,095 sessions. Add separate facial shaves to your cartridge consumption.

At €28 per visit entirely removed, the two-month Rituel budget is covered after 22 visits avoided over three years; the three-month plan after 18. If you keep part of the service or the trip, count only the spending you actually remove. Add your other costs before calculating this threshold.
